Ulita´s Loom has been producing natural fabrics on handlooms since 2007, with the application of the weaver’s artistic sensitivity to a combination of different natural materials, including silk, wool, and linen.
As a specialist in natural dyes, I dye all my wool and silk using local plants and cochineal. The colors, which I combine with taste and delicacy, reflect my love for the Canarian scenery, and, thus, create a very sensual product of great beauty.
Manual weaving is one of the oldest craft techniques, and it has had a great tradition in the municipality of Ingenio, where my studio has been located since 2023.
The careful selection of my materials combined with the use of natural dyes and traditional manufacturing techniques ensure the sustainability of my products, and they are hallmarks of my commitment to producing contemporary yet timeless textiles that are extraordinarily rich in texture and color.
Although I have a background in graphic arts, textiles and looms, in particular, have always deeply fascinated me. It was during my first trip to the Canary Islands in 1989 that I was extremely lucky to encounter some traditional local artisans and when I eventually began weaving myself, I was able to find a means of self-expression via the threads and an opportunity to plot my own story.
Nowadays, I am never happier than when I have a palpable result at the end of a day at the loom, and I hope that this happiness and my love for the weaving tradition are transmitted through my textiles and in the educational activities that I offer.
“Being creative is not so much the desire to do something as the listening to that which wants to be done: the dictation of the materials.”
